Samantha Impens : Senior 2018

“Be prepared for what will come.” Samantha Impens

East Kentwood High School Senior, Samantha Impens is most passionate about art, drawing and design. She grew to love it because she has been drawing and creating things since she was little and learned to get better and better as time went on. In her free time you’ll most likely find her doing just this.

Although she has dreamt of becoming a fashion designer since she was little, she plans to pursue nursing. Her plans are to attend Grand Rapids Community College after high school and then transfer to a university shortly after.

Sam I wish you the best with your last year in high school!

Are you interested in having your senior photos taken? There is only a small window of time left as we approach the end of fall. I will be accepting clients through November 4th and then I will be taking a break until January 2nd. Inquire a session by filling out my contact form.

The Rose Family

Today I’m welcoming back the Rose Family, Rob, Courtney, Sophia and Sawyer.

The two of us dreamt of what it would be like to have a family. In fact we practiced many times with her American Girl Dolls when we were at the ripe age of 7 years old. Courtney and I have been friends for as long as we can remember. Many times I look at her daughter Sophia and I brings me right back to those days when the two of us were in Sunday school in our little laced dresses chatting away. This family has been having me take their photos since Sophia was born. I love seeing these kiddos grow and remembering  what they were like for each stage. This year was especially fun because we were all relaxed and had time to enjoy one another’s company. Little Sawyer is celebrating his 4th birthday and if it’s even possible has become more and more cute as the years go on. When asking him who was his favorite he listed off some of my favorite people as well. Papa Lyons, Papa Biondo, Noni, etc. These specific individuals have been a huge part of who I am today and I hope they are able to treasure these moments even more than I do.

The Poll Family

Meet the Poll family; J.R., Jenna, Zach and Audrey. I’ve known this family for a few years. Their son was in my class back when I was teaching preschool. It was such an honor when they contacted me to take their photos. There is nothing I love more than to meet up with old students and families from my teaching days. I knew they were perfect to work with because they are laid back and easy going. They just played I was able to capture their beautiful family interacting together (Even after I stepped in dog poop. Yes this really happened). Thanks again Poll family for hanging out with my on this gloomy day and I hope you have a wonderful fall.

Are you interested in having your family portraits taken? I have a limited amount of time left. Until November 3rd I’m booking sessions and you can find out more about me and my pricing by filling out my contact form. I look forward to hearing from you!

Ceirra : Senior 2018

“People aren’t always going to like you & it’s okay” Ceirra Meeuwes

Ceirra is one amazing young woman. I met her years ago when she was a little 7th grader. I was her mentor through our church and she and I just clicked. After all these years she has grown in to the beautiful young woman she is. When talking with her months ago she had completely different plans. The beauty in this is that there is so much space for finding who you want to be. Currently Ceirra plans to go to college and study Humanistic Physcology. She is passionate about spreading positivity – “People can be cruel, we need more people spreading “Good Vibes” instead of hurt”. Ceirra I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you and I wish you the best year yet.

My Go To Gear For Photography

Before I get started I just want to say that I am in no way an expert. I remember when I first started out and I felt like such a faux-tographer. I bought my first DSLR and started out photography as a hobby. When I started to receive inquiries I then decided it was time to up my game a little bit. Feeling like a photographer can be intimidating and takes a LONG time to fully understand each piece of equipment. Today I’m sharing with you what I pack in my bag for any go to photoshoot.

Here is the line up:

– 1 Camera I currently shoot with a Canon EOS 7D

– Lenses

Compact Flash Cards 32 GB Transcend

Tripod Albott 64 Inch Travel Tripod

Light Reflector

Senior Changing Station Portable Pop Up Pod Dressing/Changing Tent

Sounds like a lot right? It is and I didn’t get it all overnight. It took me years to get this set up. Here is the thing, gear is super expensive and you might not have money to purchase a lot. Starting small and working your way up is what I always say when someone is looking to get in to photography. I honestly am not a fan of zoom lenses. I use them for details but that is about it. my favorites are the prime lenses and this is something I’m hoping to expand in the near future.

We all hear these lies that our gear defines us. There are those who take great iPhone photos right?

My Advice:

1. Know how to use your gear.

2. Educate yourself. This profession is constantly changing so you’ll want to make sure you are moving with it. A great inexpensive course for beginners would be All About Your DLSR and Intro to DSLR

Expecting Rain?

RainBlog (4 of 4)

Oh rain!

The forecast is calling for rain the date of your session. What do you do? Panic right? Scheduling sessions outside can be a bargain. I usually wait until the day before to check the forecast and ask clients what back up plan they would like to choose. Due to weather being fickle, I allow my clients to wait 2-4 hours before their shoot to make the call about their session. Scared to make that call? Here are some options moving forward;

1. Choose a different start time. If there are not other sessions scheduled we can move your time around. I find most “rainy days” turn out to be some sun and some rain. We can just move you to a better hour. I can’t even begin to tell you when it’s been pouring all day and then when the session time hits, there is a break in the clouds and it’s perfect weather.

2. Do it anyway. Bring your umbrella, some cute rain boots and channel your inner Donald O’Connor and sing in the rain.

3. Turn your session in to a lifestyle shoot. Have me come to your home and photograph you doing everyday things. Bake together, start a fire and roast some marshmallows, brew some coffee (or hot cocoa) and cozy up to a good book. Not only will your house smell amazing but it’ll capture you in every day life. You did your hair and make-up, why not live it up.

4. Studio Session. Come to my studio. I have a small one in my home for small children and families of 4 or less.

5. Reschedule. Please know this is subject to availability and I can’t guarantee the new date will have better weather. (This is especially true as we approach the colder months when the sun is limited and sessions are most popular)

I know it can be stressful deciding what is best. I’m always willing to shoot in a light drizzle but I leave the decision up to the client. I want to make sure he or she is not stressed and is their very best self when I shoot so if they are relaxed about it, I say go for it and see what happens.

Have you done something fun in the event of rain? Comment below. I’d love to read about it.

Hannah : Senior 2018

“Don’t look back and have no regrets” Hannah Walters

Moodboard2Hannah is absolutely passionate about horses. Whether it is riding them bareback, grooming them or simply hearing about them. She discovered her love after spending time learning their style of communication and developing a level of understanding between them.

To quote her: “My Sadle is my home, their beating heart is like it is one with mine. I just saw them and grew more and more in love with them as we bonded. I can’t get enough. It makes me feel so free.”

When Hannah was a little girl she always knew that she wanted to work with animals. To this day she is still passionate about becoming a Vet Tech.

Hannah, I had such a blast hanging out with you and hearing more about what the future holds. I pray that you receive the ultimate direction (unlike us getting lost during your session) and that you know how to make a difference in this world!

Morgan : Senior

Five years ago I had started mentoring girls in my church youth group. Terrified to put my mindset on what it was like to be in Junior High again I met some of the most amazing girls. I bet you guessed it. One of these amazing young ladies was Morgan. It has been a couple years since her and I had seen one another but after getting together it was like time had never passed. As she searches for what the future holds I pray that she make her mark on this world. I wish you all the best in your senior year Morgan!

Peyton : Senior

I met Peyton when he was in middle school. Its crazy watching him grow in to such a young man and enter his senior year! I will say that this session goes down in the books as the most fun and entertaining. A special thanks to Gleneagle golf club for allowing us to use your beautiful golf course.

Peyton is a senior at West Michigan Aviation Academy and plans to attend Michigan Tech next year. Peyton I wish you the best last year of high school!
